Lviv with a population about 900,000 is a city, where the architecture of different epochs, styles and traditions of the East and the West has combined into a unique architectural and cityscape ensemble - Orthodox, Catholic and Judaic churches located in the narrow densely built-up blocks of the city and built in the Middle Ages and later coexist with modern buildings of the city.

 

 

 

 

 

 

     The oldest church, that has survived in Lviv since the 13th century (first mentioned in old chronicles in 1292) is St. Nicholas Church. The Armeninan Cathedral of Assumption of Holy Mother of God (the 14th c.), in the exterior and interior decoration of which the Armenian motifs were used. The Latin Cathedral of St. Mary (the 14th c.) - the principal Roman-Catholic church, which has gone its construction way from Gothic to Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism to Secession. The Chapels of Kampians (late 16th - early 17th c.c.) and Boims (1609-1615), the Gunpowder Tower (16th c.), the ensemble of the Church of Assumption (16th c.) are the monuments of the Renaissance epoch. The Dominican Church (the second half of the 18th century) in Baroque style, the Greek-Catholic St. George Cathedral (the middle of the 18th century) - the pearl of the Lviv architecture in Rococo style, and this list can be continued for a long time.

     The heart of Lviv is extremely elegant Market ("Rynok") Square, the ensemble of which has been formed in the 16th - 18th centuries. Each of 44 houses is unique and has its own legend, mystery or real story resembling a fairy tale behind. This is why the central part of the city was announced to be a historical and architectural preserve and was included into the UNESCO's World Heritage List.
